Parasailing in Waikiki: Heights, Rules & What to Expect
Parasailing is one of the easiest ways to get a bird’s-eye view of Waikiki. You lift gently off the back of a boat, float hundreds of feet above the ocean, and take in Diamond Head, the Waikiki skyline and the Koʻolau Mountains in total quiet. No experience is needed. Here’s what to expect.
How parasailing in Waikiki works
Most tours depart from Kewalo Basin, just west of Waikiki. After a short safety briefing, the boat heads offshore and riders are launched from, and land back on, the boat’s deck, so you typically stay dry unless the crew offers a gentle dip. Each flight lasts several minutes, while the whole boat trip usually takes 60 to 90 minutes as other groups take their turns.
How high do you go?
Tours offer different line lengths, and you usually fly at roughly half the line length in altitude. A 700-foot line takes you about 350 feet up, while a 1,000-foot line reaches around 500 feet. Some operators offer even longer lines for higher flights. Higher means bigger views and a quieter, floating feeling.
Age, weight and other requirements
Requirements vary by operator and weather, but typically:
- Flights are tandem or triple. Riders usually fly in pairs; solo flights are not always possible.
- Combined weight limits apply, and maximums can be lower in windy conditions. Riders are often weighed at check-in.
- Young children can fly with an adult on many tours, with minimum ages starting around 5.
- Not suitable during pregnancy.
- Observers may ride along on the boat for a fee, space permitting.
Always check the specific tour’s requirements when booking.

- Relax and enjoy it: take-off and landing are smooth and controlled by the crew.
