Horseback Riding on Oahu: Gunstock Ranch Rides Compared

Riding a horse through Hawaiian ranch land, with the mountains behind you and the Pacific below, is one of the most relaxing ways to see Oahu’s countryside. Most horseback riding on the island happens at working ranches on the north-east side, away from the crowds of Waikiki. This guide covers what a ride is like, how the different rides at Gunstock Ranch compare, and what you need to know before you book.

Where to go horseback riding on Oahu

Gunstock Ranch sits at the foot of the Ko’olau mountains in Kahuku, close to Laie on Oahu’s north-east shore. It is a working ranch where you may pass grazing cattle, native trees and even wild pigs along the trail. The rides climb to a lookout with wide views over the coastline, the town of Laie and the offshore islands.

Plan on roughly an hour and a quarter to drive from Waikiki, depending on traffic. Many visitors combine a ride with a day on the North Shore, with its surf beaches, shrimp trucks and Haleiwa town nearby.

Gunstock Ranch horseback rides compared

1-Hour Scenic Horseback Ride

The 1-Hour Scenic Ride is the easiest introduction. A guide leads you through pastures and mountain trails to the ranch lookout, with a look at the Hidden Cave, a location featured on the TV series “Hawaii Five-0”. Rides run several times a day, Monday to Saturday.

1.5-Hour Scenic Horseback Ride

The 1.5-Hour Scenic Ride gives you more time in the saddle, through shady forest trails and open pastures, finishing at the lookout over the North Shore coastline and Laie. Groups are small, so it feels like a real paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) outing rather than a nose-to-tail line.

Sunset Horseback Experience

On the Sunset Experience, you ride in the late afternoon as the air cools and the sky changes colour. Start times shift through the year to follow the sunset, from about 4:30pm in the autumn and winter to 5:30pm in summer, and the ride lasts around 1.5 hours.

Private rides for couples

For a special occasion, the Private Sweetheart Experience is a private ride for two with a picnic of sandwiches on homemade bread, fruit and sparkling cider at the lookout. The Private Sunset Dinner goes further, with a locally catered dinner beside a campfire, toasted marshmallows and a guided look at WWII sites, the Hidden Cave and filming locations.

Pony rides for kids

Children too young for the trail rides can try the 30-minute Pony Rides for Kids. A wrangler leads the pony while your child sits in the saddle, parents walk alongside for free, and kids get to feed and pet the horses afterwards. Pony rides are for ages 2 and up.

Rules and requirements

Gunstock Ranch’s rules are strict, and the ranch does not refund riders who turn up and do not meet them, so check before you book:

  • Riders on the trail rides must be at least 7 years old.
  • The maximum rider weight is 235 lb, and it is strictly enforced.
  • Expecting mothers cannot ride.
  • Rides are not recommended for guests with knee, hip or back problems.
  • Every rider attends a 15-minute safety briefing, so check in 30 minutes before your start time. Arriving late shortens your ride.
  • The ranch is closed on Sundays, and tours run rain or shine. If the ranch cancels for unsafe conditions, you receive a full refund.
  • Some rides need a minimum of two riders; if that is not met, you will be contacted to reschedule.

What to wear and bring

  • Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses; a light jacket helps on cooler or rainy days.
  • Leave backpacks and large bags in the car. They are not allowed on the rides.
  • A phone or small camera on a strap for photos at the lookout.

Prefer wheels to hooves?

Gunstock Ranch also runs off-road vehicle tours on the same land, including private explorer tours, a sunset dinner tour and an eco tour where you plant a native tree in the ranch’s Legacy Forest. See our guide to ATV tours in Oahu for how they compare with Coral Crater Adventure Park.
